Adult Summer Reading 2014

Summer reading registration for 2014 starts Monday, May 19 at Clara B. Mounce Public Library (Bryan) and at Larry J. Ringer Library (CS). Adults can pick up a free reading log at either location. For every 15 days of reading, you will be entered into a prize drawing. We also have free summer events scheduled for adults at Mounce and Ringer Libraries. Our final event for both locations will be Dessert in the Stacks which will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. on July 29 at Ringer Library; reservations are required. The 2014 adult summer reading theme is Literary Elements. The 2014 Photography Contest will accept entries in June and July and have voting the first two weeks in August. Afternoon Book Club

A new book club for adults has started at Larry J. Ringer Library. All adults are welcome! This club usually meets from 5:30 to 7:00 on the first Tuesday afternoon of the month. The Afternoon Book Club will not be meeting in June. The next meeting is July 1, which will be an Open Book Club session where you can find out what other people are reading. Texas author Rachel Caine (author of the award-winning Morganville Vampire series) visited Ringer Library on February 11, 2014, to promote her new book The Prince of Shadows.

Michael Shoup of the Antique Rose Emporium visited Mounce Library on February 16, 2014, to talk about his rose books.

Upcoming Author Visits

Molly Blaisdell will be the next author to visit our library. Molly is a local author, and her crossover young adult / new adult novel Plumb Crazy will be out in June 2014. On Wednesday, June 25, she will visit with teens at 4:30 and with adults from 5:15 to 6:00. Both visits will include Star Trek trivia & twinkies. Books and Beans

If your love of books is only enhanced by a good cup of joe, the "Books and Beans" book club is for you. All adult ages, genres, and open minds are welcome….even non-coffee drinkers are welcome. Expect good coffee and even better discussion. The Books and Beans Book Club meets in the first floor meeting room at Clara B. Mounce Public Library in downtown Bryan. The club usually meets from 4:00 to 5:15 p.m. on the second Sunday of the month. Books to Go

The Brazos Valley Area Agency on Aging's RSVP (Retired Senior Volunteer Program) and the Bryan College Station Public Library System provide a program to deliver books to homebound senior citizens. Contact the Clara B. Mounce Public Library at (979) 209-5600 (in Bryan) or contact Ed at Larry J. Ringer Library (in College Station) to ask for registration materials to be sent to you. Books will be delivered every three weeks, and you can call the library to renew books. If you are interested in helping with this program, contact RSVP at (979) 595-2800 or email rsvp@bvcog.org.

Computer Classes

Computer classes in Bryan are being held at the Clara B. Mounce Public Library on Thursdays from 10:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. For more information about Bryan classes, contact Clara B. Mounce Public Library's Reference Desk at (979) 209-5600. We do not currently have computer help in Spanish, but if you are interested, contact Bobbee at (979) 209-5616 to find out if Spanish computer help is added.

Larry J. Ringer Library (College Station, TX) is offering one-on-one computer help from 7 to 8 p.m. on Mondays and free computer classes from 1:15 to 3:15 p.m. on Thursdays. Starting in June, computer classes at Ringer Library will move to Friday mornings from 9:30 to 11:30 AM. For information about College Station classes, contact Ringer Library's Reference Desk at (979) 764-3416. Larry J. Ringer Library computer classes are held on laptops in the front meeting room. The library has some, but you are also welcome to bring your own laptop and/or mouse. Reservations are not required, but class size is limited. The one-on-one computer help sessions will be held at a table in the library; for these sessions, please sign in at the Reference Desk.

Library Reading Group

The Library Reading Group usually meets on the third Wednesday of the month from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Larry J. Ringer Library in College Station. This book club is for adults and is led by Peggy. Photography Contest

The 2013 photography contest for adults had three categories: children, pets, and scenery/landscape. Our landscape winner was Frank Corley with a picture of a rocking chair and an American flag. Our landscape runner-up was Vithal Shet Tilvi with a water scene. Our kids winner was Bethany Wright with a photo of a girl and a dog. Our kids runner-up was Kathy Green with a picture of a girl reading a book. Our pets winner was Roger Peart with a photo of a lizard. Our pets runner-up was Frank Corley with a picture of a horse. Social Media

Keep up with the library system through social media. Each of the local libraries has a Facebook page, there is a Pinterest page for the library system, and we have electronic mailing lists. You can subscribe to a mailing list to receive notifications about upcoming events. Ringer Library now has a Twitter page at twitter.com/RingerLibrary.

Volunteering

Adults who would like to volunteer at any of the libraries may contact a library manager or the library system director. Adults interested in volunteering may also visit the City of Bryan's Volunteer Program website to see what opportunities are currently listed and to get an application. If you are interested in helping with one of the Friends of the Library's book sales, please contact the Friends.
