Historical Note
-
The first fire protection service for the city of Bryan began in 1871 with the incorporation of
the Hook and Ladder Company No. 1 and the organization of the Engine Company No. 1. Both merged
on March 7, 1881 to form the Protection Engine Company No. 1 of the City of Bryan.
In 1930, training in firefighting was offered annually at the Bryan fire station. The school
has since grown into the Brayton Fire Field at Texas A&M University.
Charles Griesser was one of the earlier fire chiefs with one of the longest tenures, 1928-1954,
for the Bryan Fire Department. He was paramount in the formation of the fire school.

Scope and Content Note
-
Correspondence, memorandum, certificates, newsletters, manuals, pamphlets, photographs, and
newspaper clippings document the Bryan Fire Department in Bryan, Texas. The bulk of the
material results from the tenure of Fire Chief Charlie Greisser, 1928-1954. Some material
documents his activity after his employment at the Bryan Fire Department.
The collection is divided into seven series: Fire Chief Records (0.5 cubic ft.), Membership
(0.25 cubic ft.), Legal (0.25 cubic ft.), Accounting & Financial (5 items), Public Relations
(0.5 cubic ft.), Training (0.25 cubic ft.), and Fireman's Training School (0.25 cubic ft.).
Additional material will be added to these series on an ongoing basis. Manuals are found in
both "Training" and "Fireman's Training School." The series differentiate between material used
at the school, and material used by the Bryan Fire Department members. If the use is unclear,
material is organized under the former series.
Additional material may be added on an ongoing basis.
