Meet Clara's Friends

The Friends of the Bryan + College Station was founded in 1955. From the beginning, their purpose has been to benefit the Bryan + College Station Public Library System with a variety of educational, cultural, social, civic and fund-raising activities. They work to:

  • Enhance the Library system collections.
  •
  • Encourage community use of the Library by creating programming and book sales that attract residents of all ages.

Over the years the Friends have provided funding for the libraries:

  • Summer Reading Program for children
  •
  • Purchase of new technology, furniture and materials
  •
  • Purchase a new collection of DVDs
  •
  • Purchase copiers for all three libraries

Community Librarian

Clara writes, "I think I use Mark Twain's quotation every day: 'The time to make a friend is before you need one.' The Friends support me in everything we undertake.

Sometimes the Friends' support is monetary; other times it's by helping get the word out throughout the communities and surrounding counties, building a greater awareness of library services facilities."

ACTIVITIES

The Friends sponsored and helped with a Scholastic Book Fair at the Larry J. Ringer Library. As a result, the library received $2,200 in book credits, which the library used to purchase the books given to those completing their goals. These funds also helped provide yearlong Teen Programs and Story Time.

Larry J. Ringer Library Youth Services

In addition, the Friends donated $15,000 this year to the Summer Reading Program and other yearlong children's activities to the Bryan Public and Larry J. Ringer Libraries.

Lynn Haste Sculpture at the Carnegie Library

Friends continues to contribute funding to Carnegie Library, noted for its excellent resources for family history and historical references.

Friends contributed $5,000 toward the Lynn Haste sculpture in Carnegie Garden.

BOOK SALES AND GRANTS

With our 2007 Spring and Fall Book Sales, we raised about $6,000. The date for our Spring Book Sale is set for Saturday, April 19, 2008.

Our recent grants have come from the Arts Council, the Edge Trust and the Gilbert and Thyra Plass Trust, to help expand our work in the community.

MEMBERSHIP DRIVE

In 2007, 150 individuals and 65 families became Friends of the Library. In addition, 18 individuals, families, and organizations became new Life Members, bringing the current Life Membership to 71. To see the names of all new and current Life members, go to http://www.bcslibrary.org/friends.html and click on MEMBERSHIP.

Allen Academy Students

Allen Academy was our first non-profit member under our new membership category. We hope other non-profits will join it and the Woman's Club as Life Members.

Many current Life Members choose to donate to the Clara Mounce Young Readers Program as their way of continuing their support. This program provides essential programming for children.

Some of our Life Members chose to honor family members or friends with a Life Membership.
