Jane Zhang is a writer and artist. Her works are inspired by the people she meets, places she has been and her personal journey of self discovery. Her first novel, Steps of the Callejon, is a collection of vignettes set in the barrios of Caracas, Venezuela. It is a fictionalized, personal reflection of her time as a bright-eyed—and at times—naïve missionary. The narrative weaves together the complex and intersecting issues of class, race, culture, gender and religion in the everyday lives of the barrios’ inhabitants. She has also published an illustrative contemplative book, Stations of the Cross. It is a collection of fourteen pronto plate lithograph images depicting the successive incidents during Jesus’s progress from his condemnation to his burial. Jane’s latest project is writing a children’s book inspired by her children’s favorite stuffed animals.
