Yiddish Book Center’s “Coming to America” Reading Group – *virtual meetings for now*

The Yiddish Book Center’s “Coming to America” Reading Group usually meets on the third Thursday of the month at Ringer Library. This reading and discussion program is designed to engage teens and adults in thinking about immigrants’ experiences encountering America. Using Yiddish literature as a portal, the program will feature Yiddish literature in translation that explores questions of identity, assimilation, language, cuisine, and generational change, presenting American identity as an ongoing conversation, a give-and-take between insiders and outsiders, and will compare these works written in the early 20th century to works by contemporary immigrant writers. We received a grant from the Yiddish Book Center that provided multiple copies of the book club titles. For more information, email Jessica at jonesj@bryantx.gov. The first meeting was on Thursday, February 20, 2020. The club did not meet the next few months. The next meeting is scheduled for June. The summer meetings will be held over Zoom. Contact Jessica for a Zoom invite (required) or for more information.
