Juneteenth Freedom Day June 19

Celebrate Juneteenth at your library! June 19, 1865, marks the date that Union soldiers entered Galveston, Texas with the news that the Civil War had ended and that all those enslaved were now free. Today, Juneteenth memorializes freedom, education and the contributions made by the African American community.

Juneteenth Open House and Fancy Hat Contest

Celebrate Juneteenth and our nation’s decision to close the door on slavery in this country! Meet organizations and businesses that serve your community. Enjoy activities like our photo booth, slide show and book display! Also enter our Fancy Hat Contest to win a gift card from The Remnant of Nawlins. Feel free to wear a fancy hat in solidarity, whether or not you plan to enter the contest. Event food provided by Lamar & Niki’s Pit Barbecue and Soul Food, while it lasts. Registration required to enter the Fancy Hat Contest; register in person at the Contest Registration Table on the day of the event, June 11.

2025 Author Series: Victoria Christopher Murray Juneteenth Author Visit

Victoria Christopher Murray is the New York Times and USA Today best-selling author of more than 30 novels, including the New York Times Instant Best Sellers, The Personal Librarian and The First Ladies, cowritten with Marie Benedict. Her newest novel, Harlem Rhapsody, is sure to be another great success. The first 50 people to register and attend the event in person will receive a free copy of the book Harlem Rhapsody. Books will be for sale onsite by Hyperbole Bookstore with 10% of proceeds to the Friends.

Juneteenth with Toni Simmons

Toni Simmons is an award-winning, engaging storyteller on the Texas Commission on the Arts Touring Roster. She will be performing her Juneteenth Stories at both locations.

Free tickets will be given out 30 minutes before each show, on a first come first serve basis. Seating is limited.
